Government checking the condition of the Maldivian students in Nepal following the earthquake

Following the magnitude 7.9 quake in Nepal this afternoon, Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon has said they the government is trying to reach the Maldivian students in Nepal and check their condition.

Minister Dhunya told Sun Media that there has been no word as of yet from the students in Kathmandu due to problems with phone and mobile coverage from the earthquake.

The Minister said that they are establishing a list of students with collaboration from other ministries and trying to get a word on their condition.

The quake hit at 11:56 a.m. local time (0611 GMT) at Lamjung a shallow depth of 11 kilometers (7 miles).

The country experienced a similar earthquake in 2011 in which five people died.

Nepal suffered its worst recorded earthquake in 1934, which measured 8.0 and all but destroyed the cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan.
