Police have urged vigilance about the rise in “reload” of large amounts of money.
Speaking at a press conference held at Iskandharu Koshi this evening, the head of Divisional Operations Command, Superintendent Asim Abdulla said that these cases are something that the Maldivian public needs to be aware of.
Superintendent Asim advised the public not send a reload no matter the amount if the request came from an unknown person.
“Lately, the people making these calls are using names of big promotions and ask for reloads in large amounts for big rewards. And so Police have been receiving reports about calls from different numbers and using the motorcycle promotion from Sheesha and Dhiraagu promotions, MTCC’s “Kashavaru” promotion and the Golden jubilee Independence Day promotions to acquire large number of money.” Asim said.
Responding to a question from Sun Media, Superintendent Asim said that the Police have received 30 reports of such cases up to date starting from the 1 April. And an average of three such cases is reported to the Police stations in the atolls and in Male’.
“Police are discussing with the telecommunications at the moment to seek a solution. And so TAM has shared that they are thinking of disconnecting numbers that are used as such. So far we notice that these numbers were taken under a foreigner’s name.” The Superintendent said.
In a press release issued by MTCC today said that some people are making calls claiming to represent “Kashavaru” and asking to reload a specific amount to a prepaid number specified by the “Kashavaru” promotion to win prizes.
