Government sends a bill to hasten the implementation of the new Penal Code

The government has submitted a bill to the parliament to hasten the implementation of the new Penal Code.

The amendment to Chapter 10 of the Penal Code submitted by the MP for the Guraidhoo constituents, Ibrahim Riyaz says the implementation of the new Penal Code would start on 1 July.

MP Riyaz also submitted an amendment to Chapter 521-D of the Penal Code. This is, a change to how the law now prohibits those who are implementing the law.

MP Riyaz said that the amendment was made because there are people who do not have the power to arrest, but to investigate a crime in that law.

While the government has presented a bill to hasten the implementation of the penal code, the parliament voted to delay the implementation due to an amendment presented by the government coalition.

The Penal Code prescribes criminal offenses, requirements of offense liability, offence elements, and penalties of offences, offence grades and implications, defenses against offences, sentencing guidelines and punishments along with all the procedures relating to determining of penalties
