Male City Council has said that the services provided by the council may get interrupted for a long time since they are changing the council building and because of the state of the new location.

Speaking at the new conference held at City Council today, Mayor Mohamed Shihaab said that the government has taken the current City Council building and the Housing Ministry has asked to move the City Council to the Huravee Building. And a lot of work has to be done to change the services due to the condition of the building.

Responding to a question about how long it would take to relocate, Mayor Shihaab said, “…We don’t know it’s (Huravee Building’s) condition. Have to rebuild before moving, so people out on emergency, as our regulation, we’d have to outsource those things. According to the law we have to make a statement even if we have to install an air condition. We don’t have those people. So it can take months.”

Member of City Council, Samaau Shareef said that looking at the building to which the Housing Ministry has asked to move, with the building’s condition, it would cost as much as to build a new building to start working there.

The Mayor apologized to the citizens of Male’ City for possible halt of the services being provided by the City Council. And said that the responsibility for it has to be taken by the government.

“We apologies for the inconvenience to the people. But if we had any power in this we would do so without being inconvenient. But the government has given specific time limit for this. So the responsibility should be taken by the government.” He said.

The Cabinet decided to take some places under the City Council on Monday. And some places have already been taken under the government. And so the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has started using the empty space on the City Council Building of Billoorijehige.
