Addu Airport will become a real international airport, says Adeeb

Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb has assured that Addu International Airport will be made into a “real” or full-functional international airport.

Adeeb made this remark while addressing the people of Hulhudhoo, Addu City, today, as part of his ongoing visit to the island.

He said that regardless of criticisms by opposition groups, the government’s aim is to make the airport a real international airport before the end of the year.

Construction efforts including tarring are ongoing at the moment, said Adeeb, and discussions are under way with several airlines regarding commencing international flights to the airport.

He said that the government gives high priority to the development plans for Addu, one of the three pivots of the ruling party’s manifesto.

Adeeb also said that the President will soon announce plans to develop Addu Atoll’s Ismehelahera as a resort, and that it is part of the government’s plans to expand tourism in the region by developing resorts up to 5,000 beds.

Adeeb is in the atoll to participate in events to inaugurate futsal grounds in several islands. He is joined by Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed, and 18 Members of Parliament of ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
