Transport Authority has announced plans to check vessels, to identify and take action against illegal foreign workers traveling between islands.
Director of Transport Authority Abdul Rasheed Nafiz said that the checks, to find out if foreign workers have work permit and visa, will be conducted by Marine Police and Island Councils.
The efforts which follow a request from Department of Immigration and Emigration, are set to begin tomorrow.
Abdul Rasheed Nafiz said that this would be a major step forward towards reducing illegal immigrants.
Transport Authority made an official announcement earlier, saying that fines will be imposed on owners of vessels carrying foreign workers who do not have work permit and visa.
