High Court overturns banishment sentence against former Ungoofaaru MP

High Court has overturned the lower court ruling, wherein former Ungoofaaru MP Ibrahim Ameen of corruption was found guilty of misappropriation and banished for four years.

Amin was sentenced to banishment from 1 May 2004 to 13 April 2006 for misappropriation of MVR 36,818 from the daily sales of the Ungoofaaru people’s powerhouse to the Island Office when he was in charge of the financials of the island.

High Court overturned the sentenced today saying that the money mentioned in the case is the money of the people and the court has to be sure if permission was given or otherwise before the money was taken. But the state no mention of an inquiry by the people or anyone representing the people.

And to prove that any laws were broken, the court needs which law and which chapter of the was broken and the Prosecutor General did not mention which law was broken by Amin.
