Maldives Police Service has requested the permission of Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer, to use the dog squad during operations carried out by the police.
Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed told Sun Online that following the minister’s approval, the dogs will be given uniforms and ranks.
They will be given promotions up to Sergeant level based on their performance, said Hussain Waheed.
The 16-member dog squad, Faaragema, has arrived in the country and are undergoing training.
Hussain Waheed said that using the dogs when searching for drugs would help the police in their efforts to prevent drug crimes.
The Dhivehi Language Academy has been requested by the police to give names to the dogs.
