Parliament sitting begins amid protests

The parliament sitting scheduled for today has commenced, amid the usual protests by opposition parties.

MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are calling to release former President Mohamed Nasheed, and opposition members who have been arrested in recent protests.

The main item today’s agenda include the presentation of the report by the National Security Committee on a Bill of Amendment to the Prison and Parole Act, and voting on this bill.

Other items scheduled for today’s sitting include the First Reading of the Public Service Media Bill submitted on behalf of the government by Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail, the First Reading of the Bill of Amendment to Elections Commission Act submitted by Hulhu-Henveyru MP Moosa Manik, and debates on two Bills of Amendment to the Penal Code submitted on behalf of the government by Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza and Makunudhoo MP Anara Naeem.
