Safety precautions start alongside the Link Road

A project for security measures and traffic signs for all the roads of the city has begun with the Addu Link Road.

In an interview with Sun Media today, the Mayor of Addu City, Ahmadulla Soadiq (Soabe) after a City Council meeting with the officials of the Transport Authority, said discussions were held to establish traffic signs in 13 areas of the Link Road which the officials of Transport Authority deemed dangerous.

“It’s included in this year’s budget, the money needed for the link road, so the City Council would start the work as soon as possible. Transport Authority noted some things we can start to do immediately, which includes some of the name signs.” Addu City Mayor said.

In the meeting which discussed about the importance of road safety, aside from the Link Road, changing some roads of the Addu City to One-Way streets, speed brakes and the importance of helmets were also discussed.

Mayor Soabe said that in the year 2014 alone, a total of 170 traffic collisions took place out of which, 10 were dangerous collisions in which five people have died. And officials of the Transport Authority noted that this number could put Maldives among the list countries with the most dangerous traffic collisions.

The Transport Authority has conducted a survey in Addu City in the past three days. And they presented the preliminary report at the meeting today.
