Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that by joining Raaveribe Jihadge Fethun, a swimming event organised as part of the celebrations for 50 years of independence, Maldivians have shown that they are ready to make sacrifices for the sake of the country.
In an interview to TVM today, Dr Jameel said, "Today’s events represent solidarity and readiness to make sacrifices for the country, and willingness to experience that. It also shows that everyone is equal when it comes to making sacrifices for the country. We have come this far because everyone made sacrifices to the best of their abilities,” he said.
Raaveribe Jihadge Fethun kicked off in Vilimalé at 3:15 p.m. Security and rescue services are being provided by police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
Ministry of Home Affairs said that 1,500 people had signed up to participate in the event.
The ministry further said that national songs and activities to celebrate national spirit will be held during the event, and the area at the end of the swimming route, near Social Centre, has been decorated with national colours.
