The parliament has been adjourned due to protests by opposition MPs.
MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have protested using megaphones, horns and whistles at every parliament sitting so far this year, calling for former President Mohamed Nasheed’s release.
Majority Leader, Vilmalé MP Ahmed Nihan told Sun Online that the sitting was suspended after Galolhu-South MP Ahmed Mahloof attempted an attack on the Speaker.
Nihan said that MDP’s purpose was to obstruct the efforts by pro-government MPs to pass laws for the betterment of the people.
This will not be tolerated, and security forces will be employed to remove MPs from the chamber as required in the future, said Nihan.
He added that the sittings will be conducted in an orderly environment, and action will be taken against all MPs who violate the parliament regulations.
Items on today’s agenda include the First Reading of the Bill of Amendment to the Penal Code, and the presentation of the report by the committee on the Bill of Amendment to the Civil Service Act.
