Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) has decided to hold their national congress in August.
Speaking at the news conference tonight at Salt Café, leader of DRP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) said that the DRP congress would go on from 9 – 11 August.
He said that the leadership of the party would also be established during that time. And the plans made in today’s council meeting of DRP would also take place.
Colonel said that the council meeting decided that branches of the party would be established in the atolls and would hold the elections of the branches before the congress.
Noting that the party has a lot of financial debt, he said that steps would be taken to repay it.
“Right now, regarding our party’s debt, I want to say that we have some debt that we refuse. Those debts are in court. After the court phase of the debts is done, we can achieve those debts. And a lot of debts have been settled outside the court. The party has managed the debts. Hopefully, DRP won’t have any debt by the time the Independence Day comes.” Colonel said.
Colonel Mohamed Nasheed said that a lot of the political figures are interested in joining DRP including former ministers and MPs. He said that an MP of DRP would be in the parliament before the parliamentary term ends.
Speaking about the country’s political situation, Colonel said that DRP is always a peaceful party. So the party is always looking for a solution through talks.
“In my personal view, the trail of the President Nasheed went in a very fast pace, so some of his basic rights were obstructed. For example, the right to an attorney and time to review some of the documents. I believe it was meaningful that he (president Nasheed) did not present any defence attorneys.” Nasheed said.
