Hussain Yasir, owner of the café where a waiter was murdered by a group of masked men on Saturday night, has said that the body of the victim is still in the mortuary, as he has not found a way to send it to Bangladesh.

Lhiyanu Café waiter Shahin Mia, 24, died after being stabbed in the chest.

Yasir said that he does not have the financial means to arrange the repatriation of the body.

“I am bankrupt. I have no way of moving forward. This is a murder case, I am working with the government and other sources to find a way to do this,” he said.

The cost of sending the body to Bangladesh is $2,450, or MVR 37,779.

Yasir said that the 13 remaining foreign workers employed by the café have demanded to go back to their countries following Shahin’s death.

Efforts are ongoing to arrange this, which has brought his life’s work to a halt, said Yasir.

Yasir has run Lhiyanu Café for about six years. He said that following this incident, he would have to employ new staff in order to proceed, as the existing ones are too afraid to continue working there.
