Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim has announced plans to establish a Climate Research unit next year.
Speaking at a function to mark World Meteorological Day (23 March) organised by the Maldives Meteorological Service on Monday evening, Thorig highlighted the importance of doing research on climate change.
He said that the sector has seen progress over the past few years, and noted that units have been established in five regions across the country to collect climate information.
The five units are in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, Laamu Kadhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadehdhdoo, Hulhulé, and Seenu Gan.
Awards and certificates were presented to individuals who had served Maldives Meteorological Service for long durations, and a new website for the department was launched at last night's function.
Meteorological Service was established in Maldives in 1974.
