Members of the Islamic Adaalath Party holding political posts in the government have been given time to think and choose between their membership of the party and continuing their posts in the government, said Shaykh Imran Abdullah, President of Adaalath Party today.
In a press brief held today at Adaalath Party Office in Malé, Shaykh Imran said that the decision was made by the Consultative Council of the Party.
“Our Consultative Council has decided to give them time to think. Theirs would be the decision. Today, one of our members has resigned from her political post, having recognized responsibly that she has a duty to set things right in this country and to pressure the government for reform and to bring an end to oppression”, said Imran.
Imran was referring to Sidhatha Shareef who resigned from the post of Deputy Minister for Gender, who resigned in order “to respect the Party’s decision to discontinue working with the Government”. Imran said that she “has set a very good example for others to follow”.
Shaykh Imran said that his party and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by former President Mahomet Nasheed who is now in jail following a sentence of imprisonment, have formed a special committee to work “against the government’s oppression and injsutices”. The committee, according to Imran, consisted of 7 members from Adaalath and 7 members from MDP.
“We have decided to form a roadmap for us to work together. The steering committee which would carry out necessary tasks in this has been selected, and it would begin work tomorrow. Meetings of the committee would be held starting from tomorrow, and we will see all necessary actions taken”, said Imran.
Shaykh Imran promised that Adaalath and MDP would carry out their work against “oppression and injustice without any respite”.
