Police have said that the former president Mohamed Nasheed is safe and under protection and there is no danger to him in Dhoonidhoo.
Speaking at a press conference today at Iskandharu Koshi, the Superintendent of Police, Hamdhoon Rasheed said that the police deny the allegation made by MDP yesterday saying that they have “trusted” information that the life of the former president is in danger.
“In a press briefing yesterday, MDP has said that he (President Nasheed) is in Dhoonidhoo without the safety and security he needs. We deny these allegations. President Nasheed is in Dhoonidhoo with complete protection. And they (MDP) noted that there is only one guard where Nasheed is being kept. But we deny those allegations as well.” Hamdhoon said.
The superintendent said that aside from the Police Custodial Department, the Police Professional Standard is also overlooking the security of the former president.
Hamdhoon also said that in the ongoing protest rallies in the city, police have noticed that some people stirring up trouble and vandalizing property. And the police are actively looking for these people.
“We have arrested and extended the duration of custody on some people who threw engine oil at the protestors and vandalized some of the items they used in the rally. I want to notify the public that the investigations of those cases are ongoing.” The Superintendent said.
Superintendent Hamdhoon also asked the public not to make violent confrontations with the protestors under the freedom of expression.
