Adhaalath Party who was in coalition MDP in the 2008 elections have decided to start “Maldivians Against Cruelty” movement.
Speaking at a press conference at Salt Café, the Leader of Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran said that many agrees with Adhaalath Party’s decision that halt to the major crimes going on in the country right now can be achieved through a national unity. And today, such a unity has been formed.
“We have named our national unity “Maldivians Against Cruelty” today and programs under the name are being inaugurated today.” Sheikh Imran said.
He gave an open invitation to all the Maldivians against cruelty to join the cause.
The Chairperson of MDP Ali Waheed spoke at the press conference today saying that today is a day that all the Maldivians working against cruelty are taking a giant leap.
Ali Waheed also said that the Leader of the MDP and the former president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison after an unjust trial.
The Vice President of the Jumhooree Party, Amin Ibrahim and Dr. Hussain Rasheed also took part in the press event today. Amin said that they took part in the press conference as independent citizens.
Aimn said that standing against any injustice is a responsibility of every Maldivian. And the protection of the people is not a responsibility of a specific political party.
“Our thinking is the same. We’re not representing a specific people or group. We believe it’s a just cause. We have something just to work for.” Amin said.
Amin also said that the Jumhooree Party has the invitation to work with Adhaalath Party but a decision has not been made from the party.
The leader of the MDP’s parliamentary group, Mohamed Soalih and the Human Rights Ambassador in Dr. Waheed’s presidency, Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (Sandhaa Ahamaidhee) took part in today’s press conference.
