Parliament approves Akram as EC Member

The parliament has approved, with 53 votes in favour, the appointment of Ahmed Akram to the post of Member of Elections Commission (EC), as nominated by President Abdulla Yameen.

The Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions, which reviewed the President’s nomination, said that it obtained documents from Criminal Court, High Court, Supreme Court, Maldives Correctional Service, and Elections Commission, to confirm Akram’s qualification for this role.

The committee stated in its report that Akram scored 91 points in the interview.

Akram resigned from his post as Deputy Secretary General of opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), last November.

Also at today’s sitting, the parliament approved with 53 votes in favour the appointment of Ahmed Saleem as Ambassador to Pakistan.
