Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir has proposed amendments to move articles regarding councils included in the Constitution, to the Decentralisation Act.
Amir said in the amendment bill submitted to parliament today, that the articles in the Constitution regarding the validity duration of councils and the procedure on electing council presidents and vice presidents, should instead be included in the Decentralisation act.
In this regard, he highlighted the importance of describing in more detail than is done in the Constitution, the procedures related to the decentralisation system; as well as ensuring public participation in the election of council presidents and vice presidents.
The debate on this bill was not participated by many MPs. The parliament has been adjourned, and will vote on scheduled issues when it resumes later.
