MPs Abdulla Riyaz and Ahmed Mahloof, along with family members of former Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim, have met with officials from six countries to share details of the charges against him related to import and possession of firearms.
The team, presently in Sri Lanka, met with officials from Australia, Canada, Germany, US, UK, and France.
Nazim’s brother-in-law Ismail Hameed said that issues shared with the officials include the police raid in January 2015, during which they found a weapon in Nazim’s apartment; and the family’s lack of confidence in the judicial system.
Hameed said that the family believes the charges are politically motivated, and Nazim is not likely to receive an impartial judicial process.
Criminal Court has ordered police to hold Nazim in custody until the conclusion of the trial against him on charges of import and possession of firearms. Police claimed to have found a pistol and three bullets, among other things, following a raid of his apartment about two months ago. Nazim was dismissed from the post of Defence Minister following the allegations.
