Protest against the president of the Villingili island council

The youth from the island Villingili in Gaafu Alif atoll has started a protest in front of the Island Council office accusing the president of the island council of corruption.

One of the island’s youth who wishes to remain anonymous told Sun Media today that it is the job of the people to keep the council trustworthy. And the people should know that the councilor has “betrayed” the people.

“A councilor elected by the people has to be made responsible by the people. We are having a peaceful protest. The people must know that the president of island council has betrayed the people. The people must know that.” The man said.

He said the president of the island council Niyaz Nizar has forged the signatures of the other council members without their knowledge and changed documents and are giving land to people close to him.

The president of the island council told Sun Media that the members of the council attempted a “vote of no confidence” against him recently.

“I think they are still trying that. If mine or somebody else’s corruption is seen, the government would investigate it.” Niyaz said.
