Gameera, Nahla, Naseema win Rehendhi Award

Three individuals have been presented with the Rehendhi Award, given on the occasion of Women’s Day in recognition of women’s contributions to national and social development.

This year’s recipients of the Rehendhi Award are Gameera Adam, Dhoores, Alifu Alifu Thoddoo; Naseema Mohamed Kaleyfaan, Maakoani, Meemu Muli; and Fathimath Nahla, Ma. Kabeela, Malé.

The awards were presented at an event to mark Women’s Day at Islamic Centre this morning, by President Abdulla Yameen.

Gameera won the award for her contributions in the field of agriculture. She started farming in her native island, Alifu Alifu Thoddoo, and today supplies products grown in an uninhabited island to resorts. She is also working on a book on agriculture.

Nahla is an author and film director, and some of her movies, such as Yoosuf, have received international recognition.

Naseema received the award for her efforts related to the fisheries sector. In addition to producing fish products, she is also known to conduct projects to increase awareness among the women in her native island, Meemu Muli, regarding fisheries. As a result of her efforts, Muli women’s participation in activities related to fishing have increased.

A total of 26 people applied for the Rehendhi Award this year.
