Six arrested in protest on Saturday night

Six people were arrested in the protest led by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhooree Party (JP) on Saturday night, police have informed.

The police spokesperson told Sun Online that the six people included a minor, who has been released, and five people remain in custody.

The protest began as former President Mohamed Nasheed was taken to Criminal Court for a hearing.

The crows first gathered near Fantasy on Orchid Magu, and as the hearing ended, moved near Seagull on the same road.

Protesters then blocked the road, and prevented vehicles from entering the road. This was followed by minor confrontations between them and police, and some protesters were arrested.

MDP also held a demonstration on Friday night, during which some members of the party leadership were also arrested.

Some of them have been released on the condition that they do not participate in protests for two months, while others have had their remand periods extended.
