HRCM concludes investigation into detention of Judge Abdullah

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has concluded their investigation into the detention of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed (Judge Abdullah) for 22 days in Girifushi by President Nasheed’s administration.

HRCM member Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that the report will be published in about two weeks.

“The investigation work is now complete. Now we are busy with compiling the report, which will be published latest two weeks from now,” Kareem said.

He said that HRCM investigated the human rights issues surrounding the detention of Judge Abdullah. Several people were summoned to HRCM for questioning regarding these issues, and all except few people cooperated with HRCM’s inquiries.

Kareem did not disclose details of who were summoned, citing that that is against HRCM policy; however said that their names and details will be included in the report.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Home Minister Hassan Afeef, and former Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaan are among those summoned to HRCM for inquiries.

Police have also completed their investigation into the detention of Judge Abdullah. Their report was sent to Prosecutor General’s Office last week, requesting to file charges against former President Nasheed in relation to this issue.
