President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Dr Ibrahim Didi was met with calls of ‘you are a traitor’ and objects thrown at him by MDP members, when he began his speech at an MDP rally at Usfasgandu last night.
The rally was attended by MDP chief leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed and MDP Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik.
People called Didi to leave as soon as Didi stepped on the stage, and called for his resignation as MDP President and for him to ‘leave the party’.
A close ally of Didi told Sun on the condition of anonymity that Didi normally does not attend rallies at Usfasgandu; but did so last night following a request by chief leader Mohamed Nasheed. He accused Nasheed of being behind the planning for MDP members to confront Didi to humiliate him.
Nonetheless, Nasheed, the Chairperson, as well as other senior members of MDP were trying to calm the unrest, advising people to listen to Didi’s speech.
Didi said in his speech that MDP is a democratic party, which means everyone has the freedom to criticise others’ actions. He stressed that MDP cannot be divided up, and said that Nasheed will win the presidential election and MDP will be back in power. He also said that they will not stop believing that the government was changed through a coup.
The crowd continued to shout, and followed Didi as he left the rally with Nasheed.
