Mother arrested over child

Afiya Mohamed, the mother of Mohamed Ibthihaal who died on Wednesday due to suspected abuse, has been taken from Rakeedhoo to Felidhoo in Vaavu atoll.

Afiya was arrested following a court order yesterday afternoon, following which she was questioned by the police as part of their investigation. She is presently under arrest at Felidhoo Police Station.

Police are continuing their investigation in the island by questioning people related to the incident, including councillors.

Following the tragic death, the island council said that the Afiya’s abuse against her of the three-year-old son was reported to the Ministry of Law and Gender in December 2014.

Acting Minister of Law and Gender, Attorney General Mohamed Anil said yesterday that the ministry, upon being informed of the abuse, investigated the matter and confirmed that the child was living in a safe environment.
