India-Maldives Film Festival under way

The India-Maldives Film Festival has kicked off in Malé, as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between India and Maldives.

The festival was inaugurated at a ceremony at Olympus last night, by Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Maleeh Jamal and High Commissioner of India to the Maldives Rajeev Shahare.

Last night’s ceremony included cultural performances by teachers and students of the Indian Cultural Centre in Malé, and the presentation of a $1,000 donation by the Indian High Commission to the Maldives Film Association (FAM).

Three Indian (Bollywood) movies and two Maldivian movies will be shown at Olympus as part of the Film Festival. The festival, which will take place from 20 to 22 January with free entrance, was kicked off with the Hindi film Three Idiots.

The remaining Indian films are Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, starred by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and Amitabh Bachchan’s superhit Sholay.

The local films to be shown at the festival are Ingili, which received Best Picture award last year at FAM Film Awards, and bronze award at the SAARC Film Festival; and Hulhudhaan, produced by Dark Rain Entertainment.

The Indian High Commission has said that in addition to the Film Festival, the Ticket to Bollywood Festival will begin at Alimas Carnival on Saturday night, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations.
