Yameen declared as Parliament minority leader

Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid announced at today’s Parliament session that Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is the Parliament minority party, and also that the new minority leader is PPM Parliamentary Group Leader and Mulaku MP Abdullah Yameen.

Shahid commenced today’s session by announcing the changes in MPs’ representation at the Parliament following official recognition of PPM.

Currently, the Parliament is made up of 32 MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), 17 MPs of PPM, 15 MPs of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), three MPs of Jumhooree Party (JP), two MPs of People’s Alliance (PA), one Gaumee Party MP, and seven independent MPs.

Shahid expressed hope that Yameen, as the minority leader, will cooperate with the Parliament administration. He also thanked former minority leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali for his cooperation.

Shahid further said that following the change in party representation of some MPs, work was underway to make the necessary changes to the committees of Parliament.

The new Kaashidhoo MP, JP’s Abdullah Jabir participated in today’s session.
