Nooraanee School in Hithadhoo, Addu City, in southern Maldives, has been turned into an Arabic-medium school.
Following this change, Arabic will become the medium of instruction at the school for all subjects excluding Dhivehi, Islam, and English.
This change comes under an election pledge made by President Abdulla Yameen, to establish Arabic-medium schools in the north and south of the country.
Minister of State for Education Abdulla Nazeer told Sun Online that Nooraanee School would be an Arabic-medium school with effect from the new academic year, which begins on Sunday.
He said that teachers have been trained, books have been prepared, and other necessary arrangements are in place to facilitate this change.
The school will begin Arabic-medium classes with Grade 1, for which 32 students have enrolled this year.
Nazeer said that an Arabic-medium school would be established in the north in 2017.
