A baby from the island of Laamu Maavah, born out of wedlock and put up for adoption by the mother, has been accepted by a couple in Male’.
This has been confirmed to Sun Online by the Ministry of Law and Gender.
“The mother has the right to hand over the child to another person, if she wishes to do so, without involving the ministry. The ministry would investigate the matter if the child is neglected or in danger,” the Gender Ministry official told Sun Online.
Sun Online understands that the couple who adopted the child has visited Maavah and met with the mother.
Gender Ministry as well as the police have been monitoring the situation since the mother announced on Facebook that her baby was up for adoption. The Facebook post was made by a councillor of the island.
