Tourism Ministry targets 1.4 million tourists for 2015

Tourism Ministry has said that their target is to welcome 1.4 million tourists in 2015.

According to Tourism Ministry, their target for the year 2014 was to bring 1.2 million tourists. However, 1.4 million tourists have visited Maldives by the end of 2014. That is a 7.1 percent rise when compared to tourist arrival in 2013. 1.2 million Tourists have visited Maldives in the year 2013.

While more than 1.4 million tourists have visited Maldives last year, majority of the tourists have arrived in Maldives from Asia and Europe. According to the statistics of November 2014, most tourists have come to Maldives from China.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has said that government aims to develop and widen the economy of the country and tourist arrival to Maldives can be made more than 1.2 million every year.

Bringing one million tourists to Maldives was a target set for the year 2012. The Maldivian government had narrowly failed to reach this milestone target in 2012. Tourist arrival in Maldives in that year was 958,027, which is 41,973 less than the target.
