The number of crimes reported to the police went down by 16 percent in 2014 when compared with 2013, the police have said.
The statistics on the police website show that the number of crimes reported last year was 15,716, while that for 2013 was 18,757.
Despite this decrease in overall reported crime, last year saw an increase of 7 percent in reported traffic violations. The number of traffic violations reported last year was 1959, while that for 2013 was 1823.
The most common crime this year was mugging, which also saw a 24 percent decrease compared with 2013. The number of mugging incidents reported last year was 5077, while that for 2013 was 6683.
Drug-related crimes went down by 21 percent last year. The number of drug-related crimes reported last year was 3138, while that for 2013 was 3966.
Domestic violence against women went down by 11 percent last year. The number of cases of domestic violence against women reported last year was 185, while that for 2013 was 207.
Assaults decreased by 18 percent last year. The number of assaults reported last year was 1059, while that for 2013 was 1288.
The number of deaths as a result of assault went up last year, compared with 2013. The number of deaths as a result of assault reported last year was five, while that for 2013 was three.
