Sean Paul cancels Maldives show

Dancehall rapper Sean Paul has cancelled the show in Male’, Maldives, scheduled for the night of 31 December 2014 to mark the Tourist Arrival Countdown and the New Year.

Sean Paul announced his decision to cancel the show on Facebook, where he said that today, cyber threats must affect real life decisions.

Security forces had announced that security would be strengthened at the National Stadium, where the show was to take place, ahead of the show. Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed has said that everyone would be screened before they are allowed entry to the stadium.

Jamaican papers already reported Sean Paul's cancellation of the show some days ago, following a YouTube video made by Maldivians issuing death threats to the artist. Show organiser Chopart said then, that they had not been informed of any such decision.

Authorities have not announced if the show would continue without Sean Paul. A similar show was held on 31 December 2013 as well, titled Tourist Arrival Countdown, at the Carnival. The show concluded with fireworks at midnight.
