Government to grant MVR25,000 to Tsunami affected families

The government has decided to grant financial aid of MVR 25,000 to each family affected by the Tsunami that hit the Maldives among many other countries in the Indian Ocean in 2004.

The government’s decision came as the project to provide homes for the families rendered homeless by the devastating Tsunami became complete and the last ones were handed over with their houses.

Ibrahim Muaz, Spokesperson of the President’s Office confirmed the decision to grant financial aid to Tsunami-affected families.

Ahmed Naseem, President of Th. Madifushi Council, today told Sun Online that the government has already given each family getting a new home MVR 5000, and that the Ministry of Housing had confirmed that an additional MVR 20,000 would be given, although no date for the remaining payment had been given.

41 housing units to be built in Madifushi have all been complete, while 86 units out of 87 planned for the island of GA. Dhaandhoo are also ready for use. 45 out of 50 for the island of GA. Nilandhoo are also complete, while 59 out of 77 for the island of GA. Vilingili are ready for residents. Also, 51 out of a total of 84 planned for GA. Maamendhoo are ready for use as well.
