Maldives Scout Association has today begun a project to recycle plastic bottles, after a large number of empty plastic bottles have been left as waste during the recent water crisis.
As the sole water supplier in the city of Malé went incapacitated due to a fire accident, the government and friends in the international community such as India, China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh provided a large number of bottled drinking water to the people free of charge, and now there is an excess of waste bottles.
A Statement issued by the Scout Association today said that the project to recycle plastic bottles would be carried out under the slogan “Clean Environment for a Better Health”, and that the project would have as partners the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State Trading Organization (STO).
Under the program, various reception points have been established in several locations in Malé, where officers of the project would receive empty bottles every day from 10:00-12:00 hours and from 14:00-18:00 hrs.
The Scout Association requests all households to take their wasted plastic bottles to the said reception points, instead of putting them in garbage.
Points of reception have been placed at the gate of Alimas Yoobeel Caanival, parking zone at Velaanaage, Arabiyyah School, Kalaafaanu School, and Olympus Gate of the Galolhu Stadium among others.
