Removal of Faiz, Muthasim on Tomorrow

Removal of Chief Judge Ahmed Faiz Hussain and Judge Ahmed Muthasim Adnan from Supreme Court, as proposed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has been put in the agenda of tomorrow’s parliament meeting.

According to the agenda displayed by the Parliament Office, the only item on tomorrow’s agenda is to make a decision regarding removal of the two judges. The judges from the post can be removed by obtaining two third of the votes by the parliament members in the meeting.

Amendments passed by the Parliament with 60 votes to the Court Act states that number of Judges in Supreme Court has to be cut down to five from seven. The amendment also states that JSC must inform to the Parliament, names of the two judges to be removed from the bench.

In a meeting held on Thursday, JSC has decided to forward the names of Chief Jude Faiz and Judge Muthasim to be removed from Supreme Court.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to vote against removal of Faiz and Muthasim. Parties in the government coalition; Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Jumhooree Party (JP) has not commented on this issue yet.

If Chief Judge Faiz and Judge Muthasim were removed from Supreme Court, the Judges who will remain in the Supreme Court would be Judge Abdulla Saeed, Judge Ali Hameed Mohamed, Judge D.r. Ahmed Abdulla Didi, Judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla and Judge Abdulla Areef.
