Dr. Aishath Shiham, the Minister of Education, has said that a new school capable of accommodating 1200 pupils would open at Hulhumalé next year. She said that the school would begin services with the start of the coming academic year, which would be in January.
Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Education, the Minister said that the new school would conduct classes from grade 1 to grade 10.
“As we are going to have a new school next year at Hulhumalé, which can accommodate 1200 pupils, that would be of benefit for many children who live there”, said the Minister.
The Minister said that there is demand for a new school, as the number of school-goers has been increasing over the years. She said that the number of children enrolling at grade 1 classes would increase next year by 11.3 per cent.
The Minister also said that her office would consider the proximity factor, when catering for requests from parents to enroll children at particular schools.
The information on children enrolled at grade 1 classes at various schools would be available online at the Ministry’s website from tomorrow onwards, according to the Minister.
The minister also said that there were discussions on the 20th of this month regarding the streams of study to be given to pupils who completed grade 7 and are registering for grade 8 classes next year.
