Both men and women need to be committed and work together, if violence against women is to be prevented and due protection and safety is accorded to women, says Dr. Haala Hameed, State Minister for Gender and Law.
Dr. Haala’s statements came today, at a special activity conducted to commence a 16-day campaign in protest of violence against women. The activity was held at Raalhugandu Area this evening.
Dr. Haala said the NGOs needed to play a key role and cooperate constructively in order to face the challenge of violence against women and protect women who have been subjected to such violence. She said that every member of the society needed to cooperate in the efforts against the problem.
The campaign in protest of violence against women is being organized by the Ministry of Gender and Law in partnership with Gender Advocacy Working Group (GAWG).
Ahmed Anwar, Chairman of GAWG also spoke at the program held today evening. He said that activities under the campaign would be conducted during the coming weekend. He also said that the Maldives Girl Guide Association would be involved in the activities as a partner.
In the ceremony held this evening, a special billboard signifying equality of the sexes was launched by Dr. Haala.
