A solar photovoltaic system has been established in Raa Ungoofaaru, with aid from the government of Germany.
The system was inaugurated by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim at a ceremony in the island on Saturday.
The project is part of the Support for the Climate Neutrality Strategy of the Maldives, implemented by German government’s GIZ and the Maldivian Ministry of Environment.
Environment Ministry said that the 24 kW system was installed at the school, the sewerage plant, and the power station in the island.
The ministry earlier said that the system would produce 30 percent of the highest usage of electricity per day, and replace about 3,600 litres of diesel per month.
At the ceremony, Ungoofaaru Council also joined the ministry’s campaign to lower electricity costs, It’s Cool at 25.
It’s Cool at 25 aims to reduce electricity costs by encouraging the public not to lower their air-conditioner temperatures below 25.
