Detention extended for five suspects arrested over stealing safe

Police have said that detention has been extended for five out of ten suspects arrested over stealing a safe from an office in Galolhu in Male’.

Police media official said to Sun Online on Wednesday evening that five people have been released out of those who were arrested by police, and that the suspects were arrested in Galolhu during a search operation conducted by Police Intelligence.

Court has issued an extension of five days to four suspects and an extension of ten days to the fifth suspect.

The suspects were arrested under a special search operation carried out by police on Saturday early morning after Police Intelligence received information regarding a group of people going to steal a safe from the office of Ernst and Young, a law firm, at first floor of G. Shafag.

Five Maldivian men of aged 35, 20, 28, 27, and 24 years are under police custody regarding the case.

Among those five suspects, the 25 and 27-year-old men have criminal record for theft, robbery, violence and drug-related crimes; and the 35-year-old man has criminal record for theft, robbery and drug-related crimes.

In light of the findings of the investigations conducted, police said that throughout this year, crimes related to theft of more than MVR 50,000 from Male’, and destroying and stealing safes from places, were carried out by men wearing masks, who steal after taking the necessary steps to hide evidence from police.
