Police to be stationed at Maafushi prison

It has been decided to station a police team to assist prison officers of Maldives Correctional Service in maintaining security in Maafushi Prison.

Police Media Official said that a police team would be stationed at Maafushi Prison from today onwards.

This has been decided after two dangerous criminals Ibrahim Shahum Adam of G. Cosy, Male’, and Fariyash Ahmed of Javaahiruvaadhee, Gaafu Alifu Maamendhoo, who were serving life sentence, escaped from Maafushi prison through air vents on Friday night.

Ibrahim Shahum was given life imprisonment after being convicted by Criminal Court of terrorism, for stabbing someone with a knife. The person died when he was under treatment.

Fariyash was sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering Mohamed Shihab of Kan’du olhi, Gaafu Alifu Villingili.

Police have started a special search operation in search for these two criminals. As part of their search operation, police have started monitoring ferry terminals, searching vehicles, and several locations in Male’, including residential buildings under court warrants. The police have also warned the public that the two dangerous convicts may have altered their appearance.

Police have urged anyone with any information on these prisoners to step forward and contact the police hotline on 3322111, or the Serious and Organized Crime Department on 9911099.

Police have also thanked the public for their continuous support in searching for such criminals.
