The case pertaining to the imam who was leading prayers without obtaining authorisation from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, has been sent to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office for prosecution.
Prosecutor General Muhthaz Muhsin told Sun Online that the police completed their investigation and sent the case yesterday, and efforts are ongoing to file charges before the end of the week.
The imam was arrested for violating the laws and regulations on religious solidarity, failing to obtain the authorisation for imams from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, pretending to be an imam and leading Friday prayers by forming a separate congregation at Dharumavantha Mosque, and encouraging religious strife in the society.
Police have said that the 30-year-old imam has also been accused of using drugs, possession of alcohol, and inflicting harm on a minor.
These issues have also been investigated, and cases have been forwarded to the PG Office, said the police.
