The Maldives Police Services has said today that specially-trained units would be deployed in Malé to prevent criminal activities in the capital city during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Speaking to the press today, Head of Capital Police Ahmed Abdul Rahman said that the holy month of Ramadan has been identified as a period during which crime rate in Malé increases. He said that the police have taken special measures to counter this trend, and that special units to patrol Malé had been trained in Maafushi before the beginning of Ramadan.
Ahmed said that crimes such as theft occurred more during Ramadan, and he also said that criminals the usual times at which criminals operated had been identified to be dawn and sunset, the time of dawn prayer and breakfasting, respectively.
The police said that they would be monitoring security systems at office buildings and shops day and night, and that police operations would be especially strengthened during times that had been identified as when criminals were most active.
The police urged the public to be more careful with security issues as well. It is advised that shops and office buildings and other closed avenues should be properly lighted even if closed, and should be checked for possible breaches daily even during the weekends.
