The Maldives Police Service has said that the recent report issued by the Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN), regarding the disappearance of Minivan News journalist Ahmed Rilwan, was aimed at achieving a political purpose.
In a statement issued tonight, police discounted MDN’s claim that their propose was to assist the police investigation, and said that the report is misleading and irresponsible.
The information given in the report is unsubstantiated and aims to discredit a certain political group, said the police.
Police further said that this report will impose serious obstructions to their investigation and efforts to find Rilwan.
The report reveals names and photos of persons suspected of having abducted Rilwan, which the police said compromises the rights and safety of these alleged suspects, and could even subject them to hatred from members of the public.
The issue has been reported to the police by those named in the report, said the police.
Police also assured that they are employing all resources and doing everything possible to find Rilwan.
“Investigations are ongoing by a dedicated team. Places that require searching are being searched, CCTV footage is being investigated, all necessary action is being taken, and efforts are ongoing by employing all resources available to the police to conduct a thorough investigation and to find Rilwan,” the statement said.
