The five members of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) were summoned before the Supreme Court today.
Media official of HRCM told Sun that as ordered by the Supreme Court, the five members were present at the court at 1.30pm today to attend a meeting. He however did not say what the meeting was for.
He added that the members will soon reveal to the media why they were summoned by the Supreme Court.
The members were first summoned last Wednesday, but they were unable to attend as President of the Commission Mariyam Azra was out of the country, and member Ahmed Abdul Kareem was on leave.
Members of the HRCM were summoned by the Supreme Court soon after the commission stated in its recent Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report, submitted to the UN Human Rights Commission, that the judicial system of the country is controlled and influenced by the Supreme Court, weakening the judicial powers vested in other superior and lower courts.
