People who wish to apply for flats in Hulhumale’ have been queuing at the Housing Ministry and the road outside since last night.
People who started queuing from around 11pm last night, still wait at 9am this morning with over 100 people in line.
A senior official from the Ministry of Housing informed Sun that the people in queue are waiting to submit applications for an allocated 1100 flats in Hulhumale’. He added that the deadline for submissions is extended till the end of the month, while submission has been open for four months now.
“Application for the flats can be submitted till the end of this month. Even though submission was opened four months ago, it is common for people to wait for the last moment,” he also said.
Another senior official of Ministry of Housing also said they give out 175 tokens per day for submissions. But given the long queue, they will give out tokens for tomorrow as well as for days ahead.
“We issue tokens by the rate of 175 per day. Due to the queue, it has been decided to give out tokens for the next two days today. Each token will include the national ID card number and each individual is required to bring the token when they come to submit their application.”
A person ahead in line when questioned responded that they would queue for long durations if they had to because “shelter had to be found for (their) children.”
