Farmers from islands have started bringing watermelon to Malé for Ramadan. The watermelons from the islands are kept in the “watermelon market”. Watermelon market is full of watermelon and today the price was at Mrf 8 – 10 per kg. A farmer from the island of Kaashidhoo said that he is certain that they can supply local watermelons up to the demand. He also said because of huge supply the price will remain low.

A farmer from the island of Thoddoo, the island famous for watermelon cultivation said that they have started brings watermelon to Malé two days back. “This time the supply will be very good, though I am not sure about the exact amount, every day we will bring watermelon,” said the farmer.

Ali Saeed, member of Fuvammulah council today said that the ship loaded with watermelon from the island will leave tonight. But he said that the amount of watermelon supply from the island this year would be less compared to last year. “The area in which the airport works continue was used for watermelon cultivation last year. Since that area is occupied, the supply will be less this year,” said Saeed.
