Mohamed Naseem, who was arrested on suspicion of stabbing former MP Alhan Fahmy in February 2014, has been convicted of using drugs and given a three-year prison sentence by the Criminal Court.
Police said that following this verdict, Naseem has been handed over to the Maldives Correctional Service for the execution of his sentence.
Charges have also been lodged against Naseem under the Child Sex Abuse (Special Provisions) Act.
In addition to Naseem, Mohamed Sameeh was also arrested on suspicion of stabbing Alhan Fahmy.
The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has said that the case against them is under assessment and a decision regarding prosecution will be made soon.
Meanwhile, Criminal Court issued an order yesterday to release Naseem and Sameeh, saying that the PG Office, which received the case in March 2014, has taken too long to take action.
