Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has said that the police have identified about 30 gangs, with 50 gang leaders and 500 gang members operating in the country, especially on the streets of Male’.
He made this remark while speaking at a ceremony held at Iskandar Koshi this morning to celebrate ten years since the establishment of Maldives Police Service as a separate institution.
He said that about 13 out of the 30 gangs are considered ‘dangerous’.
Umar Naseer said that there are about 10,000 drug users, of which 5,000 are unemployed, and that the gangs are formed through such groups.
Umar Naseer also said that the government is planning an ‘attack’ to address the increase in crimes such as assaults, murders, and drug offences in the country.
